The garden grew over the summer with the help of our dedicated volunteers.
We met on several Tuesdays in October with the returning third graders. The first lesson was discovering what had happened in the garden all summer. (We had a Peter Rabbit friend in the garden who also liked to eat vegetables!) We harvested and tasted tomatoes, peppers, beans, roasted butternut squash, pickled beets, kale, mint tea, and pesto made with fresh basil! YUM!
“This is the best tomato I’ve ever had!” Ben 3rd grader
The next week we harvested the wheat and did some fall planting. Look at that gorgeous fall sky!
The wheat over the summer before the bunny…
Late blooming fall flowers are important nectar sources for insects that remain active in the winter. Sometimes we found evidence of insect damage too.
On our final day with the third graders we had to relocate to the pavilion because it had rained the entire day before and provided the garden with much needed water. That didn’t dampen our enthusiasm!
We ended the third grade chapter in the garden with the “seed.” Mrs. Schach talked about completing the plant cycle by collecting seeds from our harvest to give to the seecond graders to plant in the garden next year. We sorted seeds from tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, winter squash and native flowers. We ate popcorn from our own “pop”corn while writing about our experience in the garden.
Here Mrs. Schach is talking about donating our garden bounty to local food banks as the popcorn is being prepared by garden volunteers.
And lastly, writing an evaluation of the garden experience. Thank you third grade for an awesome gardening season!
The fourth grade had a blast learning about watersheds in the creek behind the school yard.
